January 22, 2012 Mailing Services Price Change
As per a news release on October 18, 2011 prices for most Postal Service mailing products and services will change on January 22, 2012. This includes First Class Mail, Standard Mail, Periodicals, Package Services and Extra Services.
The cost to mail a 1 ounce letter increases by 1-cent to $0.45. The price of a postcard has a 3-cent increase raising it to $0.32.
Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe explained in a statement: “The overall average price increase is small and is needed to help address our current financial crisis. We continue to take actions within our control to increase revenue in other ways and to aggressively cut costs. To return to sound financial footing we urgently need enactment of comprehensive, long-term legislation to provide the Postal Service with a more flexible business model.”
Laws prevent the Postal Service from price increases exceeding the rate of inflation. According to the most recent Consumer Price Index reading, this is 2.1%. Actual percentage of price increases for various products and services varies.
The new prices were filed with the Postal Regulatory commission on October 18 and the Commission has 45 days to review and verify compliance.
As more information is released, including updated presort prices, we will notify our customers of new rates.
